Premiering in 1984, this 30 minute television special marked the second and last Care Bears special to be produced by the former Canadian company, Atkinson Film-Arts. Since American Greetings and Kenner Toys were not satisfied with Atkinson's work, production of future animated installments was soon transferred to DiC Entertainment and (more famously) another Canadian studio, Nelvana.

According to information on the 25th Anniversary Release of the Care Bears Movie, there will be an add special "lost tv episode" added in as well. Promotions are referring to it as "Professor Cold Heart and the Freeze Machine." The DVD was released on March 20, 2007 and contains what we know as The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine.
